The Tree of Heaven by Marianne Szlyk

I butt my head through
concrete. I defy
polluted soil
studded with glass.
I drink poison.
I squeeze through
fences.
Together with
rabbits and feral cats,
I colonize the park.

It is illegal to plant me.

But in China, my roots and bark
become medicine
to cure baldness.

I am the tree of heaven.
