2 poems by Kathryn Dennett

Monday Morning (winner of Nostrovia! Poetry’s Monthly Contest for May)

“The final symptom

of the hangover

is a poor sense of well-being”

so let’s walk across the river

to let the wind mask our tears

and discuss doctrine instead of divorce

because it’s really a matter of hydration

a lack of grease to coat our stomachs

the emotional nausea of the sober friend’s

quiet worry

nothing more than the price

of last night’s false sense of impermeability

“Does the loss of your country

still feel as raw?”

The moment seems to beg this question

but it cannot be answered,

For this is a document

about winning.
